Pedestrian Loses Leg in Lanes Mill Road Accident

Police: unclear why Coca-Cola deliveryman entered the roadway

Pedestrian Loses Leg in Lanes Mill Road Accident

A Coca-Cola deliveryman lost his leg Friday night after being struck by a vehicle near the Lanes Mill Road Wawa store, police said.

Jorge Garriga, 41, of Perth Amboy, was completing a delivery in the area at about 6:06 p.m. when the accident occurred.

"For reasons unknown at this time," Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian said, Garriga, who was wearing dark clothing, entered the roadway near the exit of the Wawa convenience store parking lot.

Nicole M. Atrashewski, 22, of Brick, had just turned from the eastbound lane of Burnt Tavern Road onto Lanes Mill Road in her 2006 Mazda sedan and struck Garriga and his delivery handcart, Bedrosian said.

Atrashewski came to a controlled stop 75 feet from the area of the accident, Bedrosian said.

Garriga was airlifted by Southstar Aeromedical Helicopter to the trauma unit at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Police said his leg was severed as a result of the accident.

The Bernard J. Cooke Memorial Park, adjacent to the Wawa, was utilized as a landing zone for Southstar. Herbertsville Fire Company assisted with securing the landing zone.

Brick police officers Brian Ulman and Jay Nye were the first to arrive on scene. Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics also responded.

One lane in the area of the crash was closed to southbound traffic on Lanes Mill Road during the investigation. The closure of the lane lasted approximately two hours, Bedrosian said.

Bedrosian and Officer Jay Lampiasi of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation. Surveillance video has been secured by police, and the cause of the crash is pending the investigation.

Anyone with information surrounding the crash is being asked to contact the Brick police department's traffic safety unit at 732-262-1140.
