Scotch Plains Teacher Hears Plea, 'Save My Brother;' Rescues Two Off LBI

By Judi Lynch

Chris Moffitt, Scotch Plains Park Middle School Fifth Grade Teacher showed that paying a little bit of attention to the surf can go a long way.

Eyewitnesses saw Moffitt rescue two boys in the surf off Long Beach Island this weekend.

Sitting on the deck of a beach house in Surf City, a group who knew Moffitt took notice of some kids making a lot of noise in the ocean.

According to those eyewitnesses:

They next saw a man who was fishing leave his belongings and run about 200 feet, dive into the water, and swim to two boys in distress.

Moffitt went to the first boy who said he was okay but said, "Please save my brother."

He then went to the second boy and brought him back to the shore.   Simultaneously, the Surf City rescue squad arrived.

Some kids, include Jack Lynch, Ethan and Dean Johnston, were on the beach throwing a football around and saw who the rescuer was:

Moffitt.
