BRICK, NJ — Motorists are being urged to avoid Herbertsville Road Monday morning after a sinkhole opened in one lane of the road.

The sinkhole is not far from the intersection with Sawmill Road.

Brick Sgt. Jim Kelly said the area around the sinkhole, which is about 5 feet deep, is blocked off and the Ocean County Roads Department has been contacted to repair the sinkhole.

Some cars that hit the sinkhole before it was blocked off wound up with flat tires, Kelly said.

Mike Figner, of Brick, said the sinkhole "blew my back tire and bent my rim 2 inches," when he hit it at about 6 a.m. He saw at least 10 more cars that had to pull over with flat tires caused by hitting it.

"Cop said he didn’t know how I made it over the sink hole," Figner said.

By 8 a.m. county road crews were on the scene filling it with rock, another witness said.
