Woman's Complaint Leads To Menorah Removal In Lakewood: Report

The report says the woman wanted a nativity scene added and threatened a lawsuit if it wasn't.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- A woman’s complaint and threat of a lawsuit has led to the removal of a Menorah set up in Lakewood’s Town Square, according to a report.

The Asbury Park Press report says the Menorah had been set up next to a Christmas tree in the downtown area of the township, where the population is primarily Jewish.

The Press report says the New Jersey League of Municipalities offers advice to towns regarding public holiday displays to make them as inclusive as possible. Lakewood has long had a small Menorah and a Christmas tree displayed.

Vivian Knight, whom the Press was unable to reach, reportedly told Lakewood Township officials that if the town did not include a nativity scene in the display she would file a lawsuit.

:She wanted to make the distinction that the menorah is a religious symbol and the tree is not,” Lakewood Mayor Albert Akerman told the Press.
