Garbage Truck Fire Erupts In Watchung

Drivers were asked to avoid the area and expect delays.

WATCHUNG, NJ — A garbage truck fire was reported in Watchung on Thursday.

Just after 10 a.m., Watchung Police responded with the Watchung Fire Department to Valley Road near Oak Way for a sanitation (garbage) truck on fire, said Watchung Police Captain Sherif Zaiton.

The driver escaped the vehicle and was not injured, said Zaiton.

Watchung Engine603 and Squad60 are on location along with Berkley Heights chief engine company and a ladder. A water tanker was also requested from Warren and clean up was extensive, said Watchung Fire Chief Albert DeSandolo II.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Valley Road east of Bonnie Burn Road was closed to traffic.
