Somerville Author Explains How Trump Won The Presidency Through Social Media

The book is chock full of memes, both pro- and anti-Trump, that arose throughout the campaign.

SOMERVILLE, NJ — How did Donald Trump win the Presidential election? This Somerville author has a theory in his new book “Trumped! How Tweets, Trolls and Memes Won the Presidency for Donald Trump.”

This is John Hughes’ first book and with an interest in politics it seemed only fitting to center it around the most recent election.

“This election was probably the most entertaining and interesting year in politics that I can remember,” Hughes told Patch. “I’ve followed politics since I was young and nothing struck me as so circus-like and unique as this one.”

At 262 pages and 1300 images, the book is a compilation of both historical and sociological perspective, as well as collection of the funnier memes (both pro- and anti-Trump) that arose throughout the campaign, Hughes noted.

The book starts with a historical perspective touching on how the invention of the radio helped Franklin D. Roosevelt win the presidential election and how the first televised debate helped John F. Kennedy win.

Then it moves onto Twitter showcasing not only Trump’s tweets but media sources’ tweets, Clinton’s tweets and more. Hughes also includes more than 150 memes, which he says are essentially political cartoons.

“Political cartoons used to be printed in newspapers but now with the speed of online sharing memes have become the new way of sharing political ideas,” Hughes said.
