SUV Bursts Into Flames On I-78, Ignites Median In Bridgewater
The Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department doused the car and grassy median with foam and water to extinguish the blaze Sunday in Bridgewater.
BRIDGEWATER, NJ — An SUV that burst into flames on the side of I-78 east in Bridgewater caused the center median to ignite on Sunday afternoon.
A Hyundai Tuscon was fully engulfed in flames around 1 p.m. on Sunday when firefighters arrived near exit 29 for I-287 and Route 202/206, New Jersey State Trooper Charles Marchan said.
The driver had already gotten out of the SUV that was on the left hand shoulder. The flames spread igniting a large bush fire in the center median of the highway, Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department said.

"The car fire was quickly knocked down but as a result of the damage, fuel had spilled from the vehicle and ignited on the shoulder of the highway," the fire department said.
Firefighters used foam and water on the flammable liquid fire and blanketed the area to quickly smother the remainder of the fire, the fire department said.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"As always, we ask you to please slow down and move over for any emergency vehicles on the side of the road as we had many cars dangerously pass the scene today," Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department said.
