Landscaping Truck Hits Phone Lines, Tips Over at St. Agnes in Clark

The truck became ensnared in the lines while making a turn, according to witnesses.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a Santos Landscaping dump truck laying mulch at St. Agnes Church in Clark snagged phone wires and tipped over onto its passenger side.

Clark Police and Fire and Union County Hazmat teams responded to the scene. The driver was able to exit from the tipped truck with only scratches, according to other Santos employees at the scene. They say the truck had its bed raised as it was making the turn and the bed caught the phone lines and pulled the truck slowly over onto its passenger side, right before a telephone pole.

A St. Agnes employee said she heard a big crash and breaking glass. When she came out she saw the driver had climbed out and called an ambulance for him. Fellow employees say the driver was okay and only had some scratches from the broken glass.

The Clark Volunteer Fire Department arrived after the driver was out, according to Chief TJ McDonald. McDonald says his crew laid a drying agent to absorb hydraulic fluid leaking from the truck, but that the truck's gas tank appeared to be in tact.

PSE&G also came out to inspect the pole and electric lines, but there was no damage.

Sevell's Towing arrived and uprighted the truck around 3:15 p.m.
