Details Revealed In Fatal Accident That Shut Down I-287 Southbound In New Jersey

Details were revealed regarding a fatal accident involving a motorcycle that shut down a major New Jersey commuter highway Monday, the State Police said.

A motorcyclist died Monday after he lost control of his bike while traveling on I-287 near mile marker 11.8 around 3:43 a.m., State Police said.

Jeffrey Chaparro, 26, of Somerset was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by a Mazda after falling off the motorcycle, police said. He and the motorcycle were then struck by four more vehicles.

Chaparro was riding a 2006 Honda Ruckus traveling south in the right lane when the bike fell over, and he fell, police said.

Chaparro slid into the center lane and was then struck by a 2016 Mazda 6 driven by Diestival Ramirez, who was traveling in the center lane, police said.

Information on Ramirez was not available at press time, but police said no charges will be associated with the accident.

Chaparro was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation, police said.

Traffic was stopped about four miles before the accident, and all lanes were closed and detoured on the southbound side.

The roads appeared to be cleared by 10:30 a.m. Transportation officials initially said to expect delays up to an hour-and-a-half. Here is a traffic map of the area at 8:22 a.m.:
