Millennium Memory Care Residents Benefit from Holistic Dementia and Alzheimer's Care Methods

Over the next decade, our population of seniors aged 65 and older will continue to grow in both size and proportion. Unsurprisingly, the number of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases is expected to grow as well. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, by 2025 we can expect a 40% increase in the number of Americans affected by these diseases.
One method of addressing this crisis has been to send our afflicted loved ones off to large, traditional facilities, where they might languish with scores of their contemporaries. But some Alzheimer’s care professionals believe there must be better alternatives to such a bleak fate. At Millennium Memory Care (MMC) in Monroe, New Jersey, Director Galina Markovich employs a more engaged, personalized and holistic approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
MMC opened its brand new Alzheimer’s and dementia care home in late fall of 2014, and the results are already quite impressive. One of MMC’s first residents, Alvin, arrived at the home after spending nearly three years in a much larger facility. His wife Jackie has this to say about the change in her husband:

“Alvin was not walking at all in the previous facility. He was sharing a room with another resident who was not able to speak and he was generally depressed. Within one day of arriving at Millennium Memory Care, Galina and her staff had him walking and he is enjoying conversations with the other residents. They have nicknamed him ‘The Supervisor” and given his condition, he is as content as he could possibly be.”
Even in difficult cases, the methods at MMC have reached previously unresponsive patients and brought them back to a more engaged and enjoyable life. In fact, the most challenging cases are actually welcomed at MMC. In an industry more often focused on profits and cost-cutting than effective care, this is somewhat remarkable. Director Markovich believes that those afflicted with these diseases can still enjoy some quality of life, and she has developed a number of unique care programs to make that happen.

Arthur’s mother-in-law, Anna, is another resident at MMC. Arthur reports that when she was in hospice care, Anna was unable to walk, was not eating and on a cocktail of drugs to keep her alive. Within two weeks of residence at MMC, she was taken off some medications and she is now “…thriving, participating and singing. And the hospice team said ‘You don’t need us anymore’ after just a few weeks at MMC.”
Madeline was brought to MMC on the recommendation of another facility, hoping that their methods might offer some improvement. “Madeline was violent and could not interact with other residents,” said Randi, a close friend. “Now she is totally under control and much more sociable. Galina and the professionals at MMC will go to the ends of the earth to address a patients needs and communicate with the family.”
Director Galina Markovich is a registered Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) as well as an RN, so families can be comfortable and confident that whenever possible, acute problems can be treated onsite and unnecessary hospitalizations prevented. She personally trains her staff to provide a holistic approach to care that involves finding activities and items that hold valuable memories for each resident and engaging that resident based on his or her unique needs. Residents’ family members are encouraged to visit and participate, and on any given day at MMC, one might see residents involved with arts and crafts, baking, gardening, storytelling, singing and listening to concerts, playing games, participating in holiday celebrations and even Zumba classes!
Director Markovich believes that the main ingredients of MMC’s formula for success are her innovative, extensive experience in dementia care and therapeutic home environments, the close supervision of MMC’s very knowledgeable Medical Director, Dr. Katseva, and the compassionate, personally trained staff. “We may not be able to cure the disease,” she says, “but we can improve the quality of the daily lives of our residents.”
For Galina Markovich and the staff at MMC, there is no question their methods are effective, and they are planning on opening an additional facility in the near future. As residents continue to benefit from MMC’s innovative, compassionate and holistic approach, we may be witnessing a new trend in Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
