Adolescent girls in Burlington and Mercer County can train for a race and learn life lessons simultaneously.
Girls on the Run is a dynamic 10-week program that combines training for a 5k (3.1 mile) running race with education and interactive discussions about critical issues that will affect pre-teen girls as they reach adolescence.
Trained volunteer coaches teach life lessons to girls through fun and clever running games and workouts.
The goal of the program is for girls who complete the program are physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger and better prepared to overcome the challenges and pressures of adolescence and beyond.
It has 140 chapters in the United States and Canada.
The program currently runs on Monday and Friday, 5 p.m.-6:15 p.m. at the Peddie School in East Windsor.
The program concludes with a non-competitive 5K. It follows a nationally-used curriculum with lessons that include the following:
Being Emotional is Healthy
Value What’s Really Important
Gossiping Hurts Everyone
Standing up for Myself
It’s OK to Choose Our Friends
The cost of the program is $185, but lower rates are available.
