Unsettled and Volatile Pattern This Week

If you enjoy volatile temperature swings and threats for showers and thunderstorms, then you'll likely enjoy this week.  If you like high levels of humidity, then you'll love this week.  If you like neither, then you'll likely not like this forecast very much.

A back door cold front currently over New England this morning will drop south and west through tomorrow providing increasing clouds and isolated showers by this evening on through tomorrow.  Winds ahead of this front will be from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph.  Temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid to upper 70s over Long Island and southern Connecticut and lower to mid 80s throughout the rest of the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.  The increasing humidity will make temperatures fall like the mid to upper 80s in the afternoon.

Tonight through tomorrow, clouds will increase as the back door cold front drives south and west.  A few isolated showers will be possible and will be capable of heavy downpours.  However, most of the region will remain dry.  Winds ahead of the cold front will be from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph and from the east at 5 to 15 mph behind the cold front.  Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 60's for lows throughout the region tonight.  Temperatures tomorrow afternoon will range from the mid to upper 70s over the Philadelphia metropolitan area, upper 60s to lower 70s over the New York City metropolitan area, and lower to mid 60's over Connecticut and Long Island.

Periods of showers can be expected on Wednesday as the cold front stalls over the region with over wise overcast skies expected.  Winds will be from the southeast at 5 to 15 mph.  Temperatures will range from the mid to upper 50s for lows throughout the region and lower to mid 60s for highs along the coast and upper 60s to lower 70s throughout the rest of the northern Mid Atlantic.

The frontal boundary will retreat northeastward on Thursday with periods of showers and thunderstorms.  The thunderstorms will be capable of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, hail, and wind gusts over 40 mph.  Low temperatures will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s for lows.  High temperatures will range from the lower to mid 70s along the coast and upper 70s to lower 80s throughout the rest of the region.  High levels of humidity can be expected.

A strong cold front will slowly move through the region on Friday with periods of showers and thunderstorms.  The thunderstorms will be capable of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, hail, and wind gusts over 40 mph.  Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 60s for lows and upper 60s to lower 70s along the coast, lower to mid 70s throughout the rest of the region for highs.

High pressure will build into the region with scattered cloud cover and a few isolated showers possible.  Most locations will remain dry and cool.  Temperatures will range from the mid to upper 50s for lows and lower to mid 70s for highs on Saturday.  Temperatures on Sunday will range from the lower to mid 50s for lows and upper 60s to lower 70s for highs.
