Blackwood Lake Update

Blackwood Lake Update
This morning, Gloucester Township posted on the official municipal website (glotwp.com) the following in regards to the condition of Blackwood Lake:

"Dear Resident:

We would like to explain the current conditions at Blackwood Lake. We intend to send periodic updates to you as the improvements proceed.

During normal inspection procedures of the dam under Church Road in 2013 evidence of leakage was discovered. The leak appears to be on the Blackwood side of the bridge crossing, but the exact location or locations have been difficult to pin point. Because of the leak, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Dam Safety and Flood Control ordered the Township and County to lower the lake to a safer level. We do not believe there is an imminent danger of failure, but the State is taking a cautious policy. On an historical note, this problem is in the same portion of the Dam that was washed out and rebuilt in the 1940ís.

The Townshipís Engineers have performed a series of tests and investigations to define the problem. They are now preparing recommendations and plans to resolve it. Camden County has also agreed to participate in the repairs. Once the recommendations are developed they will need to be approved by the Bureau of Dam Safety. Once those approvals are received we will be able to solicit bids from contractors to make the repairs.

Unfortunately, until the plans are finalized and approved by the State we cannot estimate when the State Department of Environmental Protection will allow the lake to be filled to its normal levels."
