Gloucester Township Police issued the following press release on "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day," a national initiative to make roadways safer:

On Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, the Gloucester Township Police Department will be participating in the day-long, nationwide “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” campaign. This campaign is designed to draw awareness to safe driving behaviors and keep our roads fatality free for one day.

Motorists are encouraged to obey all traffic laws, including obeying the speed limit, driving sober, wearing seat belts and avoiding distracted driving practices such as cell phone use.

In support of this effort, the Gloucester Township Police Department will be utilizing concentrated patrols to conduct enforcement on targeted roadways in the township.

Last year in New Jersey, 627 individuals lost their lives in motor vehicle-related crashes. This is an increase from 2010 when 556 individuals died. Although New Jersey saw in an increase in fatalities, there was a decrease nationwide to an estimated 32,310 persons killed.
