Back in January, it was announced that . Since earlier this week, there has been some local speculation as to when a Weis supermarket will actually be opening in the former Pathmark location in the Hillsborough Promenade.
As per another article, Dennis Curtin, director of public relations for Weis, was not able to confirm that the supermarket would be open in time for its 100th anniversary this fall, and said the event was projected to occur in early 2013.
“The owners of Hillsborough Promenade told me that they hoped it would open late in 2012,” stated Hillsborough Business Advocate Gene Strupinsky. “I've not heard official word from Weis themselves.”
“The Store Manager of Weis Markets in Mansfield (Hackettstown) told me that Weis is spending higher than normal amounts this year on renovating existing stores including all three currently located in New Jersey. This may mean that opening of the Hillsborough store might have to wait until these renovations are completed later this year,” he continued.
The business advocate further clarified that any delays are not due to any township approvals or regulations.
“I'm not expecting Weis to submit an application to the Building Department for a construction permit for their fit out before mid-June. At this time, any delay is strictly in the hands of Weis. The township is waiting for Weis' architects and other professionals to finish their plans and to submit them to the township for review. Until that time, all we can do is wait.”
So, yes, Weis is coming to Hillsborough. It looks like everyone will just need to sit tight and be patient. Also, as per Strupinsky, Weis has not yet approached the township for any kind of assistance related to opening their store.
“There isn't anything that we can do until they come to us with their plans. I can assure you that once that happens, we will do what we can to get them open as soon as possible. I can assure you that the township wants the jobs, the potential ratables, the positive impact on the other stores in Hillsborough Promenade, and the good will that will result from the opening to become realities as soon as possible.”
