Hoboken Police Issue Bike Theft Alert

Hoboken has seen an increase in bicycle thefts this summer, police say.

Editor’s Note: The following release comes courtesy of the Hoboken Police Department.

“During the summer months we have had an increase in bicycle thefts in different areas of our city. They have been taken from areas such as the bike racks or outside residences, while secured to the gates. To help combat these thefts we are asking residences to keep the bicycles inside their homes and not outside the gates or inside their garages unsecured.

“We understand that some residences use their bicycles as a means of transportation and need to secure them on bike racks. In a situation like this, always use a lock and chain of the highest quality.

“If anyone sees a strange person attempting to take a bicycle, do not confront them, instead call the police. The best thing one can do is be a good witness. If anyone is purchasing a new bicycle always keep the serial number available. At times bicycles are found and we can match serial numbers with an owner. The Hoboken Police Department provides registration forms which are kept on file. Anyone is welcome to come to the police station and fill one out.”
