That Sinking Feeling: Hoboken Hole Detours Morning Traffic

Road deterioration caused a foot-wide sinkhole to open on Willow Avenue, according to Hoboken city officials.

A foot-wide sinkhole opened on Willow Avenue in Hoboken on Thursday morning, requiring a detour of traffic and NJ Transit buses.

According to Communications Manager Juan Melli, road deterioration caused the sinkhole, and there was no sewer collapse or water leak.

“[Workers] are completing repairs now and the road should be open within the hour,” Melli told Patch at 9:30 a.m.

City administrators closed Willow Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets so that workers could make repairs, and NJ Transit buses on the Willow Avenue route were detoured to Washington Street south of 11th Street, according to a Hoboken Nixle alert.
