Doyle Performs Friday in Atlantic City

Former Misfits guitarist supporting debut solo album, "Abominator"

With Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time to see Doyle, the former Misfits guitarist whose debut solo album, “Abominator,” features a litany of dark tracks including “Dreamingdeadgirls,” “Land of the Dead” and “Mark of the Beast.”

“Abominator” is a full platter of horror-punk and metal that brings something to the table for everyone, from the super-aggressive title track and relentless “Headhunter” to the catchy, 1960s-like chorus of “Dreamingdeadgirls” and the monster stomp of “Valley of the Shadows.”

Then there’s Doyle himself, as imposing a figure as any ghoul from a creature feature - and he could probably take down The Mummy, Frankenstein and Dracula at one time. His band features singer Alex Story, bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Brandon Pertzborn.

“Abominator” has been out for two years now. How has the reception been? Are you working on a new record?

Everybody who hears it loves it. We already have another one done. It just has to be mixed, mastered and titled and it should be out early next year. We did it at the same time as “Abominator.” The songs are a little heavier, and somewhat blues-oriented for some strange reason.

What approach do you take to writing your guitar parts? It seems like your solo songs lean as much toward metal as punk.

My mindset is I just write whatever comes out, whatever I’m comfortable with playing.

You have a new drummer in the band.

I call him the Crusher. He’s also in Black Flag. He’s insane. Crusher Pertzborn. He’s 20-years-old and the best drummer I’ve ever played with.

It’s a couple weeks until Halloween. Both The Misfits and your solo album weigh heavily on sci-fi and horror movies for lyrical inspiration, and the music sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a splatter film. Were you always interested in horror movies?

Growing up we were really big on monster movies, monster models and monster magazines. That’s what we like to write about. To write about politics or relationships, forget it.

A couple of years ago you played with Danzig during his solo tour, performing a special set of Misfits songs. It must be cool getting to perform again with him in-between doing your own tours. Will you be playing any Misfits songs on Thursday?

We do have some surprise songs. To be playing with everyone I do, in my band and with Danzig, I’m pretty lucky.
