The Feb. 9 Lake Mohawk plunge benefits Camp Moore, a children's special needs facility.

It's freezing out, so it's the time of year to take a dip in the lake, all for a good cause.

The Sparta Elks Lodge No. 2356 will host 'Chillin' with Our Children,' its fourth annual Charity Plunge into Lake Mohawk on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. The fundraiser will benefit the Elks' Camp Moore, a camp for special needs children. Located in the Ramapo Mountains, the primary goal of the camp is to further develop the recreational and social skills of each child, according to the New Jersey State Elks Association homepage.

Other Elks' lodges host similar plunges into frigid bodies of water for the same cause. A plunger waiver, which can be found at the Elks website, is required to participate.
Sponsorships are also available; corporate sponsorship starting at $500 and an individual plunger sponsorship starting at $50. For those who would prefer not to get too soaked for a good cause, there is yet another option: support and raise pledges for Elks Camp Moore, then dip a toe or finger in the lake as a "non-plunge" supporter.

The Sparta Elks Lodge also encourages plungers to form teams with coworkers, family members and friends. Costumes of any kind can be worn to the event. The Elks will give awards for best costume.  For more information, visit the Sparta Elks website or email Anthony Alfonso, event chairman at anthonyalfonso67@yahoo.com.
