In just a few months the world famous Radio City Rockettes will be kicking their legs in another Christmas Spectacular and marching in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This summer student Amanda Krohne got a small taste of what it takes to be part of one of the most famous dance groups in the world. As one of just a handful of dancers chosen to take part in MSG Varsity's "The Rockettes Summer Intensive," Krohne and the rest of the cast trained with the best in a grueling summer program.
On Sunday night at 9 p.m. the network will show the fifth of the six part series as the girls return to the program to learn dances taught by the dancers themselves.
The episode will show the struggles the girls went through during the process. "In this episode of Rockettes Summer Intensive, not only do we see how talented these dancers are, but we also see the dedication it takes, as these girls are both mentally and physically challenged while they struggle to learn the dances," MSG Varsity Senior Vice President and Executive Producer Michael Lardner said.
Eileen Grace, who is the director and choreographer for the Rockettes said the students in the program learned a lot more than just dancing. "Each of the Rockettes achieved their lifelong dream of joining this legendary dance company through hard work, determination, and dreaming big, and that's what the Rockettes Summer Intensive dancers have done throughout this series," she said.
Grace said the girls learned how important things like team work can be when taking on the routines the Rockettes do on a daily basis. "These dancers have learned just how much strength and athleticism it takes to be one of the Rockettes," she said.
According to a press release from the network the other participants in this episode are: Sharon Bownes from West Islip High School, Jessica Chambers from Maria Regina High School in Ossining, Marisa Hann from Greenwich High School, Lauren Karow from Pascack Valley High School, Amanda Krohne from Howell High School, Kristi Lazarczyk from Morris County School of Technology, Tess Liantonio from Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, Alexis Martin from North Babylon High School, Sara Martino from John P. Stevens High School, Raquel Rosario from St. Catherine Academy in the Bronx and Micki Williams from Ridge High School, as well as last season’s Eleni Gevales from Manhasset High School.
Since the Rockettes Summer Intensive program started in 2001 47 of the girls who have taken part have earned a spot with the Rockettes according to the network. For more information on the program and the Rockettes check out their websites.
