Belmar Mayor's Ties To Sandy Contractors Come Under Scrutiny, Report Says

A fraud watchdog group set up by the state Attorney General’s Office in the wake of Hurricane Sandy will look into a complaint alleging the Belmar mayor violated ethics laws because of his wife’s ties to contractors hired by the firm that won the lion’s share of New Jersey’s cleanup work, according to NJ.com.

Days after getting a state debris removal contract on Oct. 30, Florida-based AshBritt, hired Conti Group of Edison, a construction firm, to help manage its efforts and identify local subcontractors, according to NJ.com. Conti then hired Maggie Moran — a former top aide to Gov. Jon Corzine and wife of Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty — to help develop a marketing campaign, according to NJ.com.
