Lacey Man Charged With Aggravated Assault After Hitting Cop With Power Saw
Police officer suffered concussion during the assault, chief says
A Lacey Township police officer is recovering from a concussion after a Forked River man struck him on the side of the head with a Makita power saw, Police Chief David A. Paprota said.
Officer Peter Donahue was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment of a head injury the incident, the chief said.
Donahue and Officers Adam Ewart and John McKee responded to a call for assistance at 12:39 a.m. on May 24 in the 700 block of Weehawkin Avenue, Paprota said.
When police began investigating the matter, Justin Donaldson, 28, Weehawkin Avenue struck Donahue on the side of the head with a Makita power saw, the chief said.
Donaldson was immediately arrested by Officers Ewart and McKee. Donaldson was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. His bail was set at $25,000 cash.
In the absence of a state or county correctional facility willing to assume custody of Donaldson, the Lacey Township Police Department was required to staff a police officer around the clock at the Community Medical Center to maintain custody of him for three days. He was transferred to a state facility on Monday afternoon, the chief said.
