The Township Committee did a first reading of an ordinance that would require Lacey residents to purchase a photo identification card from the Recreation Office to utilize the skate park at Gille Park.
to have the skate park monitored and opened seasonally because kids were violating the rules.
“It’s working,” said a skate park monitor who declined to provide a name. The employee has been monitoring the park for about one month now. “Kids are starting to listen.”
The skate park will now be opened from April 16 to Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m. A monitor is staffed at the park and kids are required to purchase and present a photo identification card.
The IDs would be available for purchase at the township Recreation Office for $5. A renewal fee would be $4, $5 for a lost or stolen card.
Proof of residency is necessary to obtain a card and any children younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
The cards could be utilized for other recreation functions if the township chooses.
Skater Ryley Scholl, 16, is happy with the park’s changes, he said.
“We get to skate now. There’s no bikers,” Scholl said. “(Photo Ids) are not my favorite idea but if that’s what we have to do to skate, that’s what we have to do.”
A second reading of the ordinance will be done at the next committee meeting on Thursday, May 25 at 7 p.m.
