OPINION: Former Superintendent Brower Coming Back: Thank You, Dr. Clark

OPINION: Former Superintendent Brower Coming Back: Thank You, Dr. Clark
What seems to be lost in the Board of Education/Lacey school district mess is the consistently outstanding leadership that has been provided by the Acting Superintendent Dr. Vanessa Clark.

Named acting superintendent one day last May, she had the task of guiding the district through a ton of controversy in a demoralized, politicalized environment, with no additional resources.

She did it with one hand behind her back (she had no help from an assistant, something both the former super and Dr. Brower has). In nine months, she has pushed through huge initiatives, including reformed teacher evaluations, full-day kindergarten and drug testing.

She has helped heal the district prior to Dr. Brower's return. Dr. Clark remained professional and committed to the district.

When the same board asked her to step up as acting, she did. She is a progressive, organized leader, and leads by inspiration rather than fear. I'm not sure the Lacey BOE deserves her, but the district should be proud of her.

Thank You, Dr. Clark for treating parents and students with respect. Thank you for the mindset that you serve the district's members, rather than having them serve you and the board. Thank you for being a resident of the town, attending locally sponsored events.

Thank you for knowing every employee in the district by name, from transportation, grounds, treating staff and door checkers. Thank you for starting initiatives that would have raised test scores.

Thank you.
