Sturgis Named Lawrence Twp. 'Teacher of the Year'

Angeline Sturgis teaches English as a second language to students at Eldridge Park Elementary School and had worked for the Lawrence Township school district for seven years.

Sturgis Named Lawrence Twp. 'Teacher of the Year'

Editor’s Note: The following is a news release issued by Lawrence Township Public Schools.

Angeline Sturgis, an ESL teacher at Eldridge Park Elementary School, is the Lawrence Township public school district’s 2012 “Teacher of the Year.”

Teaching in LTPS for seven years, Sturgis is certified as a teacher of English as a second language.  She received her BS in education from West Chester University.

Annually, a committee composed of district administrators, teachers, parents and a school board member selects a teacher to represent the district in the state-sponsored “Teacher of the Year” program.

Earning this distinction also qualifies Sturgis to be considered along with teachers from other Mercer County districts as a candidate for “Mercer County Teacher of the Year.”

“Angeline is very deserving of this award. She makes such an impact on her students, providing them with creative and meaningful learning experiences,” stated Kathryn Robbins, Eldridge Park School principal.  “She instills pride in her students and helps them to see and fulfill their own potential as learners.  Angeline is dedicated and committed to her students and their families. She inspires them to work hard to ensure their future success.”

Dr. Crystal Lovell, superintendent, related, “This is a well-deserved honor for Ms. Sturgis.  Not only is she an outstanding educator with a giving heart, her work in the community demonstrates her commitment to our children and exemplifies the true meaning of the ‘extended family’ partnership between home and school.”

“The Lawrence Township School Board congratulates Ms. Angeline Sturgis, one of our LTPS treasures. Ms. Sturgis, who teaches English language learners at Eldridge Park School, immerses her students in art, music, and theater; recognizes their gifts; embraces  and honors their families (through initiatives like Latinos Unidos); and commits herself to her students' academic success,” said Laura Waters, board of education president.

“I am so honored to have been chosen to receive the district's ‘teacher of the year’ award. I have taught several different grades in three different districts and one international school during my long career, and I can honestly say I find my current job as a Lawrence Township elementary ESL teacher to be the most invigorating, fulfilling, and rewarding of all. I feel encouraged by my colleagues, supported by the administration and inspired by my brave, eager, English language learners,” stated Angeline Sturgis.
