Report Card: Did Madison Schools Make the Grade?

The state DOE's report cards for each school were released Thursday.

Report Card: Did Madison Schools Make the Grade?

The outpaces the state average for language arts and math proficiency, and SAT scores, and also scores on pace or better than other districts with similar demographics, according to the School Report Cards released Thursday by the New Jersey Department of Education.

The goal of the School Report Cards is to allow the public to see how the state judges individual elementary, middle and high schools' performance in the 2010-11 school year. The information can be used to find deficiencies and plot courses for improvement.

The reports measure standardized test scores for each school in a district and also provides figures on average class size, expulsion rate, length of instruction time, attendance rate and several other factors.

It also provides financial data for districts. Madison taxes fund 85 percent of the budget, while the state average is 52 percent. Per pupil spending costs in the borough are $17,130 while the state average is $17,469. Madison only receives 8 percent in state aid while the state average is 42 percent.

The Madison High School Class of 2011 had a 97.16 percent graduation rate.

The superintendent, in a narrative submitted to the state, said the district is poised to again be a "standard-bearer in the area of progressive education."

Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi wrote,

Academically, the district has surpassed its local, district factor group, and state counterparts in virtually every benchmark set by the state via standardized assessments. Madison High School was honored in December 2011 by the College Board for being in a finite group of high schools nationally that were able to simultaneously accept more students into AP courses while raising the number of scores at 3.0 or above. The class of 2011 garnered millions in academic and other scholarships. Student academic achievement is complemented by a phenomenal array of athletic and extra-curricular opportunities. Moreover, the teams and groups that comprise those entities continue to produce award-winning/championship performances both on the playing fields and on stage.

You can find breakdowns of the individual elementary schools and grade levels on the DOE website.
