With summer winding down and school starting up, there are many family oriented events in Madison.

Family Fun in Rose City this Weekend

The first weekend after the start of school is filled with family-friendly events in Madison. Here's a rundown on what Madisonians can do beginning on Friday.

Friday, Sept. 10

  • The Madison and Florham Park Rotary Clubs will be hosting the Rotary Family Festival at Florham Park this weekend. The event began Thursday night, but on Friday night there will be fireworks at 9:45 p.m. The event runs from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. on Friday.
  • The Jerry Vezza Trio will be performing at Shanghai Jazz at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
  • Dewey's Comic City is hosting its weekly Type II Magic Tournament, with registration beginning at 6 p.m. There is a $6 dollar entry fee, but there are prizes for winners, and as a Wizard of the Coast authorized tournament, results are regularly reported. Tournaments normally run until 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 11

  • Maison Décor, D Torr, and Drip Coffee will all be donating a portion of their profits from the day to the Madison High School Marching Band for their "Strike Up The Band!" fundraiser.
  • The Madison Lodge is holding a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Donors must be over the age of 17 and in good health.

  • Jim Shooter, who was the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, as well as the founding editor of Valiant Comics, will be visiting Dewey's Comic City from 1 – 3 p.m on Saturday. He started working professionally at the age of 14 in the 1960s, and is described by Dewey's as a legend of the industry.
  • The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is hosting another Family Fun Day from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., including crafts and other activities.
