Madison is among the top 10 safest towns in New Jersey, according to a ranking released this week by SafeWise, an online security and crime data review website.
The borough ranked No. 9 on the site’s “ 50 Safest Communities in New Jersey” list of towns with at least 15,000 residents.
“Newcomers will have no trouble feeling right at home in Madison’s quintessential downtown distinct, complete with a Main Street featuring locally owned and operated shops,” the ranking—which was based on the FBI’s 2011 Crime in the U.S. Report and the site’s investigation into safety initiatives in towns across the state—said.
The ranking also pointed out the borough's sense of volunteerism, residents' ability to walk and bike around town, and "a dynamic array of art and culture."
The Madison Police Department acknowledged the ranking on its Facebook page.
"The Rose City was ranked the ninth safest community in the State,"
the department said. "The Police Department of course is not satisfied until we're number one."
