Patch can recall a simpler time when life’s joy was a roast beef sub with lettuce, tomato and russian from Campus Sub Shop in South Orange. Later, Patch went native with a shrimp loaf — a loaf of white with the bread scooped out and filled with fried shrimp — from Casamento’s in New Orleans.

Life is no longer so simple but finding a first-rate sub in Madison is, at Main Street Submarines, 187 Main Street.

The menu lists 54 varieties, from pressed ham, salami and cheese, to meat loaf and cheese, to sausage parmagiana (pronounced without the last “a” back in the old neighborhood). You can get your sandwich dressed how you like with peppers, mozzarella and of course, pickled eggplant. Half- and whole-sandwich prices range from $5.35 to $14.36.

Main Street’s ambitious sandwich menu also ranges to club sandwiches, Sloppy Joes ($6.35 and up), assorted cheesesteaks ($5.65 and up), and hot sandwiches including the Hoyt Attack: hot pastrami, cheese, mustard and hot peppers ($4.61-7.52).

Not in a sandwich mood? Check your temperature, then go for the full breakfast offerings including omelettes, or burgers, salads, soups, wraps, chicken dishes, wings, and fish. The dinner menu features comfort food standards, or the unique off-menu special: Breaded and deep-fried meatloaf served with melted pepper jack cheese, gravy and sliced potatoes, $5.95.

Main Street also has an impressive pizza menu, using homemade dough and sauce, or try stromboli or calzone. Prices range from $4.96 for an omelette, to $8.95 for fried calamari. Pizza is priced from $11.10 for a large plain pie.
