Susan G. Komen to Move to Madison in January

After a decade in Summit, Susan G. Komen North Jersey headquarters will move to Madison in January.

While the breast cancer foundation was founded in 1982 and hosts fundraising events and supports health education, screening and treatment programs, the North Jersey affiliate was started in 1997. In early 2012, the non-profit will leave its current home at 785 Springfield Ave. and relocate to 25 Green Village Rd.

Lisa Gallipoli, executive director of the Susan G. Komen North Jersey headquarters, said the building that currently houses the organization has been put "on the market by the owner."

"We found something very similar to what we have here," Gallipoli said. "We think it's going to be great and a great way to expand our presence in Morris County."

Don Links, Borough Council liaison to the , agreed that the move to Madison will be beneficial for all.

"I think it's great," Links said. "Number one, we have a full service health department. That's a big plus. Number two, at the first council meeting in October, Mayor Holden announced that it's breast cancer awareness month.

"On our junior football team, every player wears pink shoelaces for the entire month of October. Sometimes they even go through the rest of the season with them in. Cheerleaders wear pink wristbands. The town really does get behind breast cancer month in a big way."

The father of a football player and a cheerleader, both of whom proudly sport the pink laces and wristband, Links said this tradition, which began several years ago, has been a great way for youth to become aware of the issue.

"Having a full-service health department in Madison, it's going to be a great marriage and quite frankly, we will reach out and help them any way we can," Links said.
