Girl, 16, to Headline Mahwah Alliance Talk on Teen Depression

The MMA is hosting a parent presentation this February that organizers say will help parents understand the differences between normal teenage angst and clinical depression and anxiety.

The Mahwah Municipal Alliance, a group of police and parent volunteers in the township, is putting on its latest in an ongoing string of parent presentations this February.

The event, discussing teenage depression, will offer a first for the MMA – a presentation by an actual teen.

According to organizers,Teenage Anxiety and Depression: A Parent Presentation, will feature a talk by a therapist and behavioral expert on the differences between “normal” adolescent emotions and clinical depression, and a 16-year-old sharing with parents her experiences coping with depression and anxiety.

The event, set for Feb. 13 at the Sheraton Crossroads, is on the heels of an MMA panel discussion on teenage drug use, which the group hosted in November. Past MMA parent presentations include events on underage drinking and cyberbullying. MMA talks typically draw 200 township parents or more.

Refreshments will be served, and reservations to the free event must be made by Feb. 3. Email cblake@mahwahpd.org to reserve a seat.
