Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run Girls on the Run Girls on the Run

Article by Vikki Szabo, Communications Specialist for Girls on the Run New Jersey North

Nine year old, Hannah Nokes didn’t expect the amount of generosity that would come pouring in when she created a fundraising page for her Girls on the Run program. Hannah joined the Ramsey team this spring, needing a scholarship for the program.  According to her Coach Terri Peri, “Hannah started the season, new to Girls on the Run and new to the community.  What a joy it was to watch both her friendships and confidence grow throughout the season.  She started out not knowing anyone, and ended as a TEAM with STAR POWER.”  Terri started the Ramsey site after becoming the northern New Jersey’s first SoleMate.  Solemates is a charity running program in which men and women pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon, to raise money for a Girls on the Run Council.

Girls on the Run is a positive youth empowerment program for girls in the 3rd-5th grade.  Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through fun, engaging lessons that celebrate the joy of movement. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run® coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society.  They will also train together and complete a 5k at the end of the program.

In an effort to give back, Hannah and her mother Amanda created a donation page when Amanda registered for the spring 5k.  To date, Hannah has raised $1662 or 10 scholarships for other girls needing financial assistance.  According to her mom, Hannah was very excited to have a chance to help other girls experience Girls on the Run.  Hannah checked her site daily and personally thanked every single donor that came in.  She approached everyone she knew and shared her experiences in Girls on the Run.  Because of Hannah and her generosity, Girls on the Run New Jersey North will be able to provide the gift of GOTR to ten new families this fall season!  For more information regarding Girls on the Run or our Solemates program, email us at info@gotrnjn.org or visit our website www.gotrnjn.org
