Three NFL Players will Highlight Mahwah Community Spirit Showcase

The Super Bowl-sanctioned event in Mahwah next week will feature former Giants George Martin and Karl Nelson, and Mahwah's own NFL player Kevin Haslam, as well as 100 local non-profits.

Three NFL Players will Highlight Mahwah Community Spirit Showcase

The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is putting the finishing touches on a Super Bowl sanctioned pre-game event next week that is meant to celebrate the teamwork involved in football, and in volunteering for area non-profits.

The Chamber’s Super Community Spirit Showcase is happening next Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheraton, and in addition to showing off 100 local non-profit organizations, the group announced this week it will also feature some past and present NFL players.

George Martin, a defensive end who played with the Giants form 1975 to 1988, is set to give a talk on teamwork as it relates to community, successful charities, and football, the MRCC announced in a release this week. Martin, who is well known for the 3,020-mile walk he took across the United States in 2007 and 2008 to help raise money for September 11 responders, will be joined by several other NFL players at the event.

Martin, Karl Nelson – an offensive tackle who was a member of the 1986 Giants Super Bowl winning team – and Kevin Haslam – a Mahwah native who has played for the Jaguars, Raiders, and Chargers, will be giving out free photos and autographs at the event, the release said.

In addition to the football at the event, which is sanctioned by the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee, locals will get the chance to learn about 100 local charities, and the chance to help them out.

Attendees will vote for their favorite charity and the winner will receive 100% of the net proceeds of the event.

Admission $25 online, $30 at door, $10 students with ID. Tickets can be pre-purchased on the MRCC website.
