Lafayette Mills School May Highlights

Students showed off their talents, took the NJASK, dug for dinos, and read at Barnes and Noble's!

Lafayette Mills School May Highlights

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

NJASK Testing (April 30th-May 11th)

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 took the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge. This assessment, mandated by the state, assessed students' knowledge of writing, reading, mathematics, and (for grade 4 students only) science.    Make-up testing was held the following week for any students who were absent during regular testing.

PTA Plant Sale (May 8th and May 9th)

The PTA afforded our students the opportunity to purchase flowers for Mother’s Day. The sale was conducted during lunches not to impact instructional time.

Dinosaur Day (May 18th)

If you were to enter a 2nd grade classroom on May 18, 2012, you would have embarked on a dinosaur experience. After weeks of intense study on dinosaurs, the students were ready to show what they learned and challenge themselves further. The students, sporting their newly decorated white t-shirts with dinosaur designs, eagerly entered the Dinosaur Zone, which was made up of our four-second grade classrooms. The students rotated from classroom to classroom where dinosaur theme activities allowed the students to engage in a fossil dig, create a dinosaur museum, make a dinosaur flipbook, and competed as teams in Dinosaur Jeopardy (SMARTBoard activity). The second graders had a wonderful time, and may have some future paleontologists in our midst.

Band and Orchestra Concert (May 21st)

On the evening of May 21st, David Geltch and Tara Blick presented to the Manalapan community their Intermediate Band and Intermediate Band/Beginner Orchestra Concert. Students performed for a full house in the MEMS auditorium.

Talent Show Assembly (May 22nd; Evening Performance May 24th)

Ms. Lauren Coppolino (Resource Teacher) and Ms. Amanda Sofield (3rd Grade teacher) did an outstanding job supervising the Lafayette Mills 2011-2012 Talent Show. The students bravely auditioned in front of several teachers who acted as judges, then worked extremely hard during each practice to put together an outstanding show for their peers, their families, and the staff. A special thank you to Mrs. Carlin for making the beautiful banner and Mr. Gandelman for helping with the sound equipment.

Barnes and Noble Night (May 24th)

Mrs. Margaret Pierciey, the interim Lafayette Mills media specialist, did an excellent job working with the media specialists from our sister schools this year's Barnes and Noble Night where reading was celebrated. Students from Lafayette Mills were joined by their peers from the other 1 – 5 buildings and shared their love for reading by listening to guest readers and by making book marks.
