Early morning incident leads to arrest of local man

Toms River Man Arrested for Firing Shots in Domestic Dispute
A Toms River man was arrested early Sunday for firing shots into the air during a domestic dispute, police said.

Delovi Canales Jr., 27, of Albert Avenue, was arguing with a woman on the front lawn of the Walnut Bay Apartment Complex on Walnut Street when he fired several rounds from a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun into the air, said Police Chief Mitch Little.

Police were called to the complex at 3:49 a.m., Little said. Investigating officers found that Canales was brought to the complex by a friend and eventually began arguing with the female and asking her to leave with him. During the incident, Little said, Canales displayed a black semi-automatic handgun that he had tucked in his waistband and made "threatening remarks."

After the shots were fired, Ptl. Sean Smith, Ptl. Eric Harris and several other Toms River officers responded to the area, and Canales was located a short time later at his residence and was placed under arrest, said Little.

Detective Roger Hull headed the investigation and charged Canales with making terroristic threats; unlawful possession of a weapon; possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes; and possession of a weapon by a certain person prohibited from having a weapon.

He is being housed at the Ocean County Jail on $150,000 bail. A photo of Canales was not available.
