A Friday afternoon crash along Route 70 near Manchester Boulevard sent three to the hospital and caused traffic delays in the area.

The crash occurred on the state highway just east of Manchester Boulevard at about 12:07 p.m. when a 1998 Peterbuilt dump truck and a 1997 Dodge Ram collided head-on, said Manchester Police Department Lt. Vincent Manco.

The driver of the Ram, 48-year-old John Greenough and his passenger, 45-year-old Rebecca Clayton — both of Browns Mills — were taken by MONOC1 and New Jersey State Police SouthStar helicopters to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, acccording to Manco.

Franklin Vallejo Jr., 66, of Browns Mills, was transported to Community Medical Center by a Quality Medical Transport ambulance, Manco said.

The extent of the injuries was not known as of late Friday afternoon.

"The crash also caused significant damage to two JCP&L utility poles resulting in Route 70 being closed for several hours," Manco said. Traffic in both directions on the highway was detoured on to Beckerville Road. At the time, a continuous line of vehicles waited at the Manchester Boulevard intersection to rejoin Route 70.

Ptl. Thomas O'Hare of the police department's Traffic Safety Section is investigating the crash, Manco said.

Also responding to the scene were Whiting's fire department and first aid squad, MONOC paramedics, New Jersey Division of Transportation, and the New Jersey State Police Commercial Vehicle Inspection Unit.
