Meet the Maplewood Township Committee Candidates

Patch will be highlighting one question each day so check back to see what the candidates have to say about ongoing issues.

Meet the Maplewood Township Committee Candidates

Three Maplewood Township Committee candidates, running for one seat, all attended a public forum, Thursday, hosted by the Hilton Neighborhood Association.

The candidates, incumbent Committeeman Marlon K. Brownlee and newcomers Art Gartenlaub and Kurt Kiley, had the opportunity to answer prepared statements based on five questions posed by the Hilton Neighborhood Association.

Each candidate was given two minutes for an opening statement, a minute and 30 seconds for each question and an additional two minutes for closing statements. Members of the public also had the opportunity to ask questions directly.

Patch will be highlighting one question each day so check back to see what the candidates have to say about ongoing issues.

The questions were:

  • The disrepair of foreclosed residential and commercial properties is a major concern in Maplewood. How can the Township improve the banks' maintenance of the foreclosed properties, on an on-going basis?
  • Besides high taxes, what do you think is Maplewood's most pressing problem? Describe how you would solve the problem.
  • What would you do to attract better quality and more diverse businesses to the business districts in Maplewood? (Irvington Avenue, Maplewood Village, Springfield Avenue).
  • The behavior, such as harassment, loitering and vandalism, of Milton School students, impacts the quality of life of immediate neighborhood residents. How would you address these problems and maintain safety?
  • Are you committed to maintaining the Hilton Library? What are your reasons?
