Marlboro EDC Rolls Out Tax Rewards Program With Business Owners

Business owners are invited to join the Economic Development as the Shop Marlboro tax rewards program is rolled out.

Just nine months after the initiative was announced, the Economic Development Committee is ready to roll out its new tax rewards program, partnering the local government and businesses to offer property tax breaks for residents shopping in Marlboro.

The rewards program acts as an incentive to keep Marlboro residents patronizing Marlboro businesses. A portion of purchases made in Marlboro at participating businesses will go toward property tax bills.

"For example, if a resident has a $200 dinner at a local Marlboro participating restaurant where that merchant’s program rebate is defined as 20 percent, then $40 (less nominal third-party program management and processing fees) would be applied as a credit against the tax bill of that resident" said an EDC news release.

All purchases and bills will be tracked by the township through individual ID cards, swiped at the register. The cards were donated to the township by The Investors Savings Bank.

Marlboro is the first township to enact a system like this, which will be run through modified existing programs in businesses and the township.
