First-Grader Dies After Gym Class Medical Emergency In Sussex County

NEWTON, NJ — A first-grader in Newton has died following a medial emergency in gym class, Newton School District Superintendent Kennedy Greene told Patch.

The girl suffered a seizure during gym class at Merriam Avenue School Wednesday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Greene said that her classmates were removed from the room as teachers performed CPR. He called the death a "tragic loss," and said it would take a long time for the community to heal.

Newtown police said the girl's death was under medical investigation by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
