No, those waving searchlight beams in the sky over Upper Montclair on Saturday night were not your imagination. The beams signaled the start of the Montclair Film Festival's Filmmaker Party at the Montclair Station Restaurant.

From council candidates Rich Murnick and Robin Schlager working the room, to Mayor Jerry Fried and developer Dick Grabowsky discussing assisted living projects, it was an interesting night.

An open bar and an array of appetizers—not to mention the chance to meet the filmmakers—draw a massive crowd to the party that included Stephen and Evelyn Colbert.

Organizers of the film festival, which ends today, said they were already planning for next year.

They had effusive praise for the Upper Montclair business community, which they said fully embraced the film festival by putting ribbons on parking meters and decorating store windows to the hilt.

Amazingly, not everything is sold out. Today you can still see About Face, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, King Kong, Downtown Express, The Red Shoes, and The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, among others.
