A Montclair business owner was the recent target of an ongoing phone scam involving callers posing as PSE&G representatives demanding money to keep the victim's power on.
According to Montclair Police, the business owner was told the electricity was going to be shut off unless immediate payment was made with a Green Dot money card. The caller advised the victim to purchase the card at CVS and to call him back with the card number and redemption code, police reported.
The business owner became suspicious and contacted PSE&G, which advised the victim this was a known scam and to refuse payment.
Police advise residents and business owners to contact the main corporate number to verify the identity of solicitors for any company requesting money or payment for services.
