Van Vleck Gardens Is For The Birds—And Bats

Enjoy some time—and some nocturnal creatures—in the garden on Friday, Oct. 12.

Van Vleck Gardens Is For The Birds—And Bats

Enjoy some time out in the Van Vleck Gardens with your family—and some live bats as well—on Friday, October 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm.

Joseph D’Angeli of The Wildlife Conservation and Education Center will give a slide presentation about different bats that live in New Jersey and around the world. Discover the vital role bats play in our environment, and find out how important these wonderful nocturnal creatures really are
while meeting them up close and personal.

The presentation is open to individuals and families (recommended for ages 5 and up). The fee for the event is $7 per person for Friends of Van Vleck, $10 per person for others.

For bird lovers, Deb DeSalvo is offering two different guided birding
hikes. Join Deb on Friday, October 19, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., for a walk
through the gardens in search of birds that stay in New Jersey for the
winter. Learn how they are equipped to survive long nights and cold
temperatures. The hike is designed for children ages 5 and up,
accompanied by an adult. The fee is $5 per child for Friends of Van
Vleck, $7 per child for others.

Join Deb DeSalvo again on Friday, November 2, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., for the Owl Prowl. The mature stands of evergreens at Van Vleck are the
perfect place for owls to call “home.” Learn about these great hunters
of the night while enjoying a stroll through the gardens in search of
signs of these beautiful creatures. With any luck, you may even spot
or hear one!  The hike is designed for children ages 5 and up,
accompanied by an adult. The fee is $5 per child for Friends of Van
Vleck, $7 per child for others.

All events are held at Van Vleck House & Gardens, 21 Van Vleck
Street, Montclair. Pre-registration is requested. To register, call
973-744-4752 or 973-744-0837 or e-mail  education@vanvleck.org.
