Parents Express Concern Over Transgender Policies at Moorestown BOE Meeting

The school district is following the law and keeping an eye on a pending decision from the Cherry Hill School District.

Moorestown, NJ -- Parents voiced concerns about the Moorestown School District’s lack of communication when it comes to policies of transgender students using bathrooms and locker rooms at last week’s Board of Education meeting, the Moorestown Sun reports.

Transgender students are defined as students who are born as one sex, but identify as the other.

Joe Ruccolo told the board he felt distrust over the board’s statement that it wouldn’t discuss what the plans are with the rest of the community, according to the report.

“I understand it’s a private issue with the child, but it is also a private issue with my daughter,” Ruccolo said, according to the report.

The board said it follows the law when it comes to transgender students, and offers four options: using the nurse’s bathroom; using the bathroom outside the main office; using the bathroom in the fourth and fifth grade wings; and going to the bathroom with a friend.

The board said anyone who is uncomfortable can always speak with the administration, according to the report.

The district is working on a plan, and is keeping an eye on what the Cherry Hill School District decides on the issue during its meeting next month.
