12 Families Evacuated During Newark Labor Day Fire

The Mount Prospect Avenue fire affected about 12 local families, Newark officials say.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities say that nearly a dozen families were evacuated from their homes during a four-alarm fire at two Newark apartment buildings on Labor Day.

Firefighters arrived in the area of 839 Mount Prospect Avenue around 12:50 p.m. on Monday and battled the flames until 1:40 p.m. when the fire was declared under control, the Newark Department of Public Safety announced.

Authorities said that two, three-story buildings suffered damage, which also extended to two other nearby buildings in the area.

Emergency responders evacuated about a dozen families during the incident and a fire captain was evaluated for ankle pain, authorities said.

The cause and origins of the fire is under investigation, authorities stated on Monday. Anyone with information can contact the Newark Fire Division at (973) 733-7510.
