Fire At Newark Recycling Facility; 2 Firefighters Injured

About 80 Newark firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze at Giordano Recycling, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A pair of firefighters were injured while battling a blaze at a recycling facility in Newark on Monday evening, authorities said.

About 80 members of the Newark Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at Giordano Recycling on Frelinghuysen Avenue at 6:45 p.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found flames and smoke coming from all floors of the three-story building.

Firefighters searched for occupants but nobody was inside, authorities said.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after they fell from a loading dock. One remained on duty. The other was transported to University Hospital, where he was evaluated and released before also returning to duty. No other injuries were reported, officials said.

The fire was put under control at 8:22 p.m.

The Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze, officials said Tuesday.
