Rutgers Quarterback Jailed After Assault; Former Teammate 'Fighting For Life'

Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson, who transferred from Minnesota in January, was arrested Sunday morning for an assault in Mankato, Minn. that left a former teammate reportedly struggling to survive, police said.

CBS in Minnesota reported that Isaac Dallas Kolstad, 24, of Mankato, Nelson's former teammate, was "fighting for his life" on Monday.

At 2:09 a.m., while on patrol in the town's downtown entertainment district, officers of the Mankato Department of Public Safety police service came across a victim of an apparent assault near the intersection of Cherry and South Front streets, police said.

Kolstad was transported to the local hospital by ambulance. A suspect was located on scene and taken into custody for probable cause assault, police said.

The suspect, Nelson, 20, of Mankato, was then taken to the Blue Earth County jail. Police are looking for another person who was involved in the assault.

Charges of third degree assault are being requested against Nelson.
