Twelfth Night Party at Historic New Bridge Landing

Close out the holiday season at New Bridge Landing on Sunday

Twelfth Night Party at Historic New Bridge Landing

The Bergen County Historical Society is inviting everyone to celebrate Twelfth Night on Sunday. Twelfth Night is the traditional end of the Christmas season. For those of you who count the song "The 12 Days of Christmas" among your holiday favorites, it is the day with the "12 drummers drumming."

According to the Bergen County Historical Society, "Festivities surrounding Twelfth Night were the most lavish of the year, featuring a great feast with bonfires, plays, music, dancing and wassailing."

What exactly is 'wassailing?' It's described by the Society as "Making twelve fires of straw and drinking toasts of cider or ale."

Everyone is invited to celebrate Twelfth Night with the Bergen County Historical Society and is encouraged to bring "a favorite food or drink" and celebrate some New Year cheer the old fashioned way. And wassail. Minus the fires of straw, of course.

Twelfth Night takes place on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Campbell-Christie House, 1201 Main St., River Edge.

Suggested donation: $7 adult, $5 children, BCHS members free.
