Ocean City Mayor's Report: Beach Safety

The Ocean City Beach Patrol produced a video about safety that runs frequently on Channel 97.

Ocean City Mayor's Report: Beach Safety
Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian posted the following statement cautioning city residents and visitors about beach safety on the city's website this week:

Dear Friends,

I would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy Independence Day weekend.

I hope that you and your families enjoy all of the wonderful activities, special events, shops and dining that Ocean City has to offer, but please keep safety in mind whether on the beach, in the car, on your bicycles or walking the downtown and boardwalk.

I ask all of you to only swim at protected beaches.  For the protection of your family please strictly adhere to the following reminders:
  • Only swim at guarded beaches.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Never drink alcohol before swimming.
  • Always respect the power of the ocean and become knowledgeable about its dangers, especially rip tides.
We are expecting stronger than usual rip tides this weekend.  An informational video regarding rip tides has been produced by the Beach Patrol and can be seen frequently on Ocean City’s Channel 97.

I encourage you to view this video with your family to better understand how these dangerous conditions occur and what you should do if ever caught in a rip tide.

I also hope everyone enjoys the boardwalk fireworks show this weekend, which has now been rescheduled to Saturday, July 5 at 9:30 PM.

Please leave fireworks to the professionals, and I ask that for safety’s sake that you and you families do not ignite pyrotechnics on your own.

I wish you and your family a safe and fun filled Fourth of July weekend.

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian Mayor
