WATCH: Meteor Flies Over Morris County Monday Night

226 sightings from Delaware to Maine reported Monday night.

Always be aware while driving.

That’s what Pete Czech did Monday night, and it resulted in a once-in-a-lifetime sighting.

The 36-year-old Cedar Grove resident was heading home from a family function in Pennsylvania Monday night when he saw what looked like a firework zooming over Rt. 287 in Morris County around 6:30 p.m.

ā€œThe video doesn’t do it justice,ā€ Czech told Patch of the hurtling meteor that came into his view while heading north on the highway. ā€œI saw it visually. It was bright, like a firework at low altitude.ā€

It just so happens that Czech’s father gave the motorist a new dashboard camera for Christmas, which he installed only a few days ago.

ā€œI’ve never seen anything like this before, it’s really a once in a lifetime thing,ā€ he said.

Czech’s YouTube video, transmitted from the dash-cam, is posted below. The meteor comes into view – upper right corner – around the five second mark.

The American Meteor Society is reporting 226 meteor sightings between Delaware and Maine occurred on Monday, Dec. 29.
