Ceremony in Washington, DC recognized the Ramsey school as one of the nation's best

Hubbard School Principal Molly Dinning called a ceremony in Washington, DC recognizing the school’s national Blue Ribbon Award “a really wonderful experience.”

Dinning and Hubbard special education teacher Wendy Adair attended the ceremony earlier this month along with representatives from the other 268 schools across the country that received the highly-regarded US Department of Education recognition this year. The recipients of this year's awards were announced in September.

The two-day conference featured speakers like Marcus Johnson of Sanger, California, the 2011 Superintendent of the Year, and US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Both gave, “inspiring” speeches, Dinning said during a presentation on the ceremony to the Board of Education last week.

Johnson spoke of the importance of “being the light, and sharing with other schools what we are doing that is working so well,” Dinning said.

Duncan pointed out that in 30 years of handing out Blue Ribbon awards, about 7,000 schools across the nation have gotten one, she said. There are over 100,000 schools in the country.

“To be in the top 7% is really quite an honor,” Dinning said.

According to the principal, the school’s strong character education program was one of the aspects that set it apart.

According to a release from the state, Hubbard is “among [New Jersey’s] highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests.”

Hubbard is one of 16 New Jersey schools that received the Blue Ribbon recognition this year. See the full list  here.
